Celebrating Global Exhibition Day: The Importance of Exhibitions for Trade Industry Associations

As we celebrate Global Exhibition Day, on the 5th of June every week, at n-Gauge we look back and reflect on the learning we have had in the Exhibition Industry. When n-Gauge was established in 2008, we were on a mission to establish India’s first company that was focusing on developing technologies for large membership Based Group. Working with Association was a natural choice as we realised these Associations were guided by community leaders who had a limited tenure, in which they had many plans and ideas to execute-all this, we believe, is driven by a strong desire to leave a legacy and give back to the community that they were representing. As we got more and more involved and we evolved we started understanding the importance that Exhibitions and Conference play towards not just creating a financially lucrative asset for the community but also to building the leader’s legacy over his/her tenure.      

So on this special day, I take the opportunity to reflect on 5 key learnings we have learnt over the years working some of the largest shows in India. 

1. Every Trade Industry Association must consider organising an Exhibition, if they haven't done it already.  

Exhibitions organised by Association have some unique advantages over Exhibitions organised by Private companies. 

• The purpose and reason: Right off the bat, this makes the maximum difference. When a private organiser is organising an event the primary objective is drive by making more money and rest follows. Whereas in Exhibitions organised by Association, while making money is important, it is definitely not the first on the list of priorities. This allows the organising team to be oriented to make the show bigger and better rather than making money.   

• Industry Insight and Credibility: Most industry Associations and bodies have organised or unorganised industry knowledge, as a group. An Association organised event also brings credibility as the platform does not belong to any individual or the group but it belongs to the whole community. 

• Network and Reach: Associations typically have an extensive network of members and industry contacts. This network is invaluable in promoting exhibitions, ensuring high attendance, and securing participation from prominent companies and thought leaders.

• Resource Availability: Associations often have access to resources that individual companies might lack, such as funding, organizational expertise, and dedicated staff. This enables them to plan and execute large-scale events effectively.

• Collaboration and Representation: Exhibitions organized by associations serve as a collective voice for the industry, highlighting shared concerns, goals, and achievements. One can see a true sense of collaboration as well executed event is in the greater interest of the entire industry

On the other hand, for the leadership of associations, organizing successful exhibitions provides a unique opportunity to create a lasting legacy. Here’s how:
